About the event

Thirty-year-old Kasumi, portrayed by Miura Tōko in her first screen role since Drive My Car (2021), has always been single and uninterested in romance, much to her mother's frustration. Pressured into an arranged marriage meeting, she unexpectedly meets someone who understands her perspective. Supported by her lively friend Maho, Kasumi seeks to live authentically, free from the rigid expectations of love and marriage imposed on young women.

Directed by award-winning Japanese screenwriter and director known for his work in both film and television, Tamada Shinya, I Am What I Am is a sensitive and sincere exploration of asexual identity, challenging the conventional notion that romantic love is essential for fulfilment. This anti-romance film opens a window into the lives of those who defy societal norms, offering a rare and poignant depiction of the struggle for self-acceptance and the pursuit of personal freedom.

Join us for an engaging Asian Pride X CinemAsia collaboration, with a panel discussion after the screening. We'll delve into asexuality and queer (Asian) representation in cinema, exploring themes of (asexual)identity, cultural intersections, and heteronormative norms. Panellists will offer unique insights and spark thought-provoking dialogue. Don't miss this chance for introspection and meaningful conversation!
